The Yamaha P155 is part of a long heritage of excellent electric pianos dating back to the early 1980's. In the 70's we had the CP models (CP30 and CP70), that were later followed by the PF analog pianos. All of these models were well received by players, and some - believe it or not - are still around. We see them in our repair shop from time to time getting broken keys replaced.

The Yamaha P155 digital piano is geared toward the gigging musician who requires quality piano touch and tone. It is also ideal for home use or as a practice piano. It comes in three different finishes - wood grain, black and silver - and features include quality sound and a Graded Hammer Effect key action capable of building proper finger technique, and a Yamaha Three Year Warranty.

The natural-sounding four-layer piano sample is a breakthrough at this price range. Depending on how hard a note is struck, one of four recordings will play, offering an unprecedented level of dynamic range and tonal expression for a digital piano. Yamaha YDP181 Arius 88-Key Digital Piano

The Yamaha Arius YDP181 88-key weighted digital piano first shipped in the summer of 2010. It is the replacement for the best selling YDP223, which began shipping in November 2002. An eight year lifespan for a digital piano in this day and age is incredible!

As the replacement for the Yamaha YDP223, the YDP181 has some big shoes to fill, but based on its specifications and sales, it is doing an admiral job.One of the most noticeable differences is the sound. The YDP181 features High Resolution piano samples with damper resonance and 128 note polyphony (the YDP223 had 64). Other new features include a 2-track, 3 song sequencer and USB TO DEVICE port for storing your data.

With the Graded Hammer Effect keyboard, lower notes on the keyboard have a heavier touch, just as on a traditional acoustic piano, while the higher ones are more responsive to lighter playing. Entry Level Musical Keyboards

First time buyers of musical keyboards are not always aware of the features and benefits of particular models, nor or they aware of what would benefit them or their child most. But there is one important feature piano teachers insist on in a portable keyboard - touch response. That is the ability of the keyboard to respond to the players touch; playing a key harder will produce a louder sound, playing it softer will produce a softer sound.

One exception to this would be if you're buying a digital keyboard for a very young child who is not going to be taking lessons, but using it to explore music and sound. However, even young children are taking organized music instruction these days. Let's take a look at the entry level electronic keyboards from both Yamaha and Casio. Roland makes some excellent keyboards too, but they do not have any models in this price range.

The Yamaha PSRE313 and the Casio CTK4000 electronic keyboards both feature touch response, and other similar features like 61 keys, drum rhythms, and hundreds of voices (sounds), more than you'll ever use. The Casio has a USB port to connect it to your computer (software required), and the Yamaha has MIDI In/Out ports that allow you to do the same with an adapter.

In the not so distant past, if you purchased an inexpensive instrument, it sounded inexpensive. Not today. Because of the advancement of recording techniques and digital technology, today's musical keyboards sound great and are loaded with useful features. A few dollars go a long way, and the quality of the products is very good.

Please remember, these are entry level keyboards suitable for young beginners, and should be replaced after a successful first year - two at most - of lessons. All three models, which are currently available, feature USB functions, 32 notes of polyphony, recording capabilities and built-in speaker systems.
